When I came down to write this essay, I wondered who developed the first black forest cake and what it meant in the dessert world. So I did what any other person in my situation would do: I Googled it.

The original black forest cake is a German delicacy with layers of chocolate cake, cherries, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings, I discovered. Different nations deviate somewhat from the original concept, and some countries include alcohol in their cakes. Traditionally, bakers in the United States do not seem to create this cake using alcohol. Finally, authentic black forest cakes are adorned with black cherries.

I’ll be the first to say that I’m not a big fan of cherry. So the fact that I like this Black Forest Poke Cake shocked me. Cherries, in my perspective, seem to be tough to deal with. The whole pitting procedure is just too much for me!

This is when canned cherry pie filling comes in handy! Thanks to my Lucky Leaf buddies, you and I can both bake this poke cake fast!

Do you know what a poke cake is? It derives its name from the fact that once you take it out of the oven, you poke holes all over the top of the cake! I prefer to poke huge holes in the cake so that the toppings soak in and become ooey and gooey. This makes the cake spongy and moist, much like a tres leches cake. It is also served cold, which is maybe my favorite way to eat cake.

A container of hot fudge sauce covers the black forest poke cake. You know my theory: more chocolate equals better! Then, pour the can of cherry pie filling over the top of the cake and smooth it out. You may also press some of the cherries into the cake at this point.

I couldn’t help but stick to tradition and top this cake with fresh whipped cream. Believe me when I say that it is much superior than the alternative. If handmade whipped cream isn’t your thing, you may substitute Cool Whip.

Don’t forget to add some chocolate shavings! This is quite simple. All you need is a chocolate bar and a sharp knife. Start by cutting little slices off the end of the bar; it should naturally break apart; sprinkle on top of cake.

The greatest part about poke cakes is that they come together fast, can be created ahead of time, and are guaranteed to wow your guests! Make this cake this weekend with a can of Lucky Leaf Cherry Pie filling!

Description

This gooey chocolate cake is filled with hot fudge, topped with cherry pie filling and fresh whipped cream, then topped with chocolate shavings.

Ingredients

  • 1 box Chocolate cake mix
  • Ingredients specified on the box: eggs, oil, water, and so on (note that I substituted milk for water).
  • 1 jar Hot fudge sauce (16 oz)
  • 1 can Lucky Leaf Cherry Pie Filling
  • 2 C Heavy whipping cream
  • 1 C Powdered sugar
  • Chocolate bar for shavings
  • OR Cool Whip instead of whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Mix the cake mix according to the package directions. Mix on medium speed until everything is fully blended.
  3. Bake for 20-22 minutes in 913. Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake to check for doneness. The cake is done when the toothpick comes out clean. Allow for a 10-minute cooling period.
  4. While the cake is still warm, poke holes all over the top with the end of a wooden spoon or any round item.
  5. Microwave the jar of hot fudge sauce for approximately 30 seconds, or until it can be stirred and thinned down. You may need another 30 seconds. Pour the hot fudge sauce over the top of the cake and allow it to soak until the cake is cold. Allow to cool fully before serving.
  6. Open the container of Cherry Pie Filling and evenly distribute it over the top of the cake. Allow the cake to cool fully before serving.
  7. Whip up the whipped cream. Place the bowl and whisk attachment in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to make them extremely cold (this step is optional, but it is a typical technique I follow). Pour heavy whipping cream into a chilly mixing bowl and beat on medium speed for approximately 3 minutes. Increase the speed to medium high after adding the powdered sugar. Beat until stiff peak form is achieved.
  8. Spread whipped cream on top of the cake. Chop up a chocolate bar and sprinkle it over the top of the cake. Store in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Cool whip may be used in place of fresh whipped cream.
  • I recommend this very moist chocolate cake for a handmade chocolate cake.
