Celebrate the Fourth of July with these Patriotic Rice Krispie Treat Smores. Rice Krispie Treats in red and blue coated with marshmallow frosting and dipped in chocolate. Roll them in graham crackers to finish.

I generated material with Wilton goods as a part of the Wilton Treat Team. My efforts are rewarded. I only work with companies that I know and like. As usual, my choices are all mine.

This weekend, something dreadful happened: my microwave quit functioning. I know, right? The horror? Because the heating element does not operate, it is virtually worthless. But how would I melt my butter? was the first thought that sprang to me. This is what I call a food blogging issue. I hope we can have it corrected fast, but from what I’ve read, it’s not an inexpensive remedy. Have you ever experienced anything similar?

Since Memorial Day is coming up next weekend, I thought I’d break out the red, white, and blue with these Patriotic Rice Krispie Treat Smores. I had the thought while traveling home earlier this week. My initial Rice Krispie Treat Smores were always a hit, and I’ve made countless versions since then.

This recipe also provided an excellent opportunity for me to experiment with the Wilton Color Right Performance Color System. Last month, I had the pleasure to try this product at the Wilton Sweet Up event. Wilton’s Color Right system is a new product. Because it is a very concentrated colored gel, it will not dilute the consistency of the product you are coloring (for example, frosting).

It also has a color matching mechanism that specifies how many drops of each hue to add so that you always mix the same color! I know how stressful it is when my frosting runs out and I have to recolor it; it’s so tough to get the same color again! Another thing I like about this method is that it provides a plethora of color combinations. I adore the color wheel, but I’m not very good at utilizing it!

This time, I colored my melting marshmallows with the Color Right to create red and blue Rice Krispie Treats! I rinsed out the pans between usage since I had to do each color individually. I melted the marshmallows as usual, and then added a few drops of the Color Right gel and stirred until it was fully integrated. Who doesn’t like a batch of electrifying blue Rice Krispie Treats?

To make the Rice Krispie Treats extra thin, I used a 12 by 17 Jelly Roll Panthat was lined with parchment paper. I took the back of my spatula to spread and press out the Rice Krispie Treats into thin sheets, less than a thick. Then I let them sit until they became a bit more firm.

A round cookie cutter is usually useful. I bought the stacking circular cookie cutter set a few years back. I constantly use them! Each sheet of Rice Krispie treats should yield 12 Rice Krispie circles, allowing you to utilize one of each color for the Smores.

I created a standard marshmallow frosting using egg whites, sugar, and corn syrup for the marshmallow frosting. My go-to dish comes from my buddy Lauren @ Climbing Grier Mountain. Any marshmallow frosting recipe would suffice. Simply pipe the frosting on one side of the Rice Krispie Treat and place another on top.

The sandwiched sweets were then dipped in chocolate. I used Wiltons Limited Edition Smores Candy Melts for the Milk Chocolate and White Candy Melts for the White Chocolate. Shake some patriotic sprinkles on top while the chocolate is still moist!

Because I didn’t have a microwave, I melted the candy melts in my Wilton Melting Pot. To help flatten out the candy melts and make them excellent for dipping, I usually recommend adding at least 1 tablespoon of Crisco vegetable grease.

After dipping these delights, I placed them on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper to cool. I sometimes put them in the refrigerator to help them chill faster.

Finally, roll the opposing side in crushed graham crackers to complete the smores effect. Of course, this is optional. Take a big bite out of these Patriotic Smores Rice Krispie Treats! They’re ooey, gooey, and full of marshmallow and chocolate, just like a regular Smore.

I’m counting the days till the three-day weekend! So, how about you?

Description

Celebrate the Fourth of July with these Patriotic Rice Krispie Treat Smores. Rice Krispie Treats in red and blue coated with marshmallow frosting and dipped in chocolate. To finish, roll them in graham crackers.

Ingredients

  • 15 oz bags Mini Marshmallows (1 bags)
  • 4 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 box Rice Krispie cereal- Family Size (24 oz)
  • Wilton Color Right Blue gel
  • Wilton Color Right Red gel
  • For the marshmallow frosting
  • 2 large Egg whites
  • tsp Salt
  • C Sugar
  • C Corn syrup (hot).
  • bag Wilton Smores Candy Melts
  • bag Wilton White Candy Melts
  • Crushed Graham Crackers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Half the Rice Krispie cereal. Half of the mixture should be placed in a large mixing basin.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 4 small marshmallows. Stir constantly over medium heat until the marshmallows are melted. Add 3 drops of Wilton Blue Color Right Gel in blue. Stir until well blended.2 tablespoons butter and 3 tablespoons rice krispie treats (RKT)
  3. Sprinkle the blue marshmallows on top of the cereal. Using a spatula, coat the cereal completely.
  4. Grease a large baking pan or cookie sheet (12×17) with cooking spray. Fill the pan halfway with the cereal and marshmallow mixture. Spread evenly with a spatula. Place a piece of wax paper on top and gently press the mixture into the pan. You’re looking for a thin, compact coating of RKT. Allow at least 30 minutes for them to solidify.
  5. Repeat with the second half of your cereal and marshmallow, but this time use Wilton Red Color Right Gel (3 drops). You should have two pans, one with blue Rice Krispie Treats and the other with red Rice Krispie Treats.
  6. While your goodies are hardening, make your frosting according to this recipe. You will have excess icing, which is OK!
  7. Cut your RKT into circles using a juice glass or cookie cutter. There should be 12 of each hue.
  8. Apply marshmallow frosting on one side of the dessert using a spoon or a piping bag. Place the RKT in a contrasting color on top.
  9. If you’re making different types of candy melts, you may use a melting pot or heat them in the microwave. I used approximately a full bag of each flavor of Smores and white sugar melts, which is more than you need but you don’t want to run out.
  10. Combine candy melts and 1 tablespoon Crisco vegetable shortening in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 45-second intervals, stirring every now and again, until melted and smooth.
  11. Dip Rice Krispie Sandwiches in candy melts and place on parchment paper to set for 10-15 minutes. Garnish with sprinkles. Refrigerate to expedite the process.
  12. Roll one side of the Rice Krispie Treats in crumbled graham crackers if desired.
  13. Serve within one day.

Notes

It’s a good idea to spray your spatula with cooking spray to keep the marshmallows from sticking.
